No Weed About It.

They creep. They crawl. They emerge with a mission to conquer.

March is the time to battle. The on-going battle begins with these nuisance creatures that want to own and devour the nutrients of your yard/garden. The frost may come and your blooms may wither, but not the weeds. They continue to grow and spread despite the lack of rain or sun.

When weeding, then don’t be afraid to go old-school. Take a garden hoe and dig it into the ground. You want to make sure that you are pulling up the entire root to ensure that the weed discontinues it’s growth. Now…don’t get me wrong…more weeds will come; however, if you pull up the weed and it’s root, then you’re looking at a longer time span without a replacement weed.

This method can serve as excellent therapy and exercise. You are able to release tension while building muscle.

If you have areas such as a paved driveway, concrete driveway, shed, retaining wall, etc. then in my opinion I purchase/create herbicides to prevent weed regrowth. Weeds are so over bearing that they find ways to surface, despite any barriers. I also use herbicides around my mailbox, porch steps, decorative rocks, as well as around my trees.

If you want to save money and create larger amounts of weed killer, then you can create it yourself. I enjoy making my own weedkiller and it has proven effective. Jimmy cannot stand the smell of it, but I am more concerned with the aftermath. If you want to make your own weed killer, then follow these simple steps:

DIY WEED KILLER:

You will need: 1 Gallon of White Vinegar, 1 Cup of Table Salt, 1 TBSP of Dawn Soap

Step 1: Pour ingredients in an empty 1 gallon jug, then mix and shake.

Step 2: Get a spray bottle (Dollar Tree for $1) and pour your ingredients into. You can also use landscaping sprayers for this method.

Helpful hint: Try to spray whenever the sun is shining directly on weeds or during the hottest part of the day.

If you are not planning on making your own herbicide, then I recommend purchasing these herbicides to use for weed prevention:

  1. Ranger
  2. Round-Up Extended Control
  3. Spectracide

As we grow closer to spring, then remember it is better to start cleaning out now as opposed to later. Now is the time to get weeds under control before they explode and drive you insane all spring and summer long.

March is also the time to study. Begin thinking of things you might want to change, new additions, access to sunlight, garden decor…it’s all what is to come soon ya’ll.

Dig in the dirt, ya’ll.
