Letting loose.
To my runners who constantly hear:
- OMG, you’re insane. Why do you put yourself through that?
- Just think about your knees when you are my age.
- You are just so afraid of gaining weight.
The list goes on and on whenever people find out that I run or attend a class at the YMCA. The questions, comments, opinions that others feel should impact my daily decisions. I am sure that many of you understand what I’m talking about…so let’s focus on the why.

I am a runner. I run from stress, insecurities, anger, anxiety, depression. I run to feel my heart, lungs, muscles, and every other organ prove that I CAN. I push myself, I strengthen myself, and I encourage myself. Thanks to running I can embrace my thunder thighs and bass. I’m a literal storm on the pavement. When I feel my feet flowing beneath me, then instantly my inner stress flows behind me.
Running is a hobby for me that releases every little negative thing that wants to bring me down. It is a time of reflection and meditation. It is a time to embrace my fur babies’ radiant energy. It is a time to move forward.
Many of my friends find this same release in painting, playing music, yoga, reading, writing, cleaning, crocheting, or even cooking/baking.
It is not a “Why do you do it?”
It’s more along the lines of “Why do I need it?”
I think it is essential for everyone to find their “escape.” It’s not healthy to carry the weight of stress, negativity, insecurities, etc. on your shoulders.
Find a hobby where you can release, revamp, and recharge.

A hobby can be similar to a habit. It takes time and patience as your hobby becomes part of your routine, mentality, and well-being. We are working towards healthier lifestyles people..not working to earn metals, awards, or strike new careers.
