A Weekend Stroll In Southport, N.C.

Jimmy and I took off the weekend of April 20th-22nd to enjoy some much needed coastal air. Along with a need for a change of scenery; I spontaneously decided to sign up for a half marathon around the first of March. I had not been training or preparing for the distance which came to my decision to run flat (which I found out has it’s challenges). Anywho, follow along as I recap some highlights of our weekend in this quaint and cozy town.

The Southport Bed & Breakfast Inn.

Our weekend began by arriving at The Southport Inn to drop off our belongings and check into our room. The Southport Inn is located in the heart of downtown and sits beautifully up the street from the waterfront. We were welcomed by the fairly new owners; Elias and Mary, who were warm, cheerful, and abundant hosts. As soon as we walked into the historic home, we couldn’t help but admire the history, restoration, delicacy, as well as southern charm. Mary and Elias were quick to show us their lovely buffet that supplied different wines, snacks, and scrumptious homemade cookies. I helped myself to five homemade oatmeal cookies. The room that we stayed in is named The Davis Room; this room is located in the middle of the house with a queen size bed, fireplace, private bath, and tasteful decor. The name suitably fits it’s location and eloquence.

On Sunday morning we were awakened to sweet aromas from the kitchen. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast with French Toast & Cream Cheese Casserole, Twisted Bacon Strips, and fresh fruit.

Fishy, Fishy Cafe.

On Friday evening, we sought out for dinner and arrived right down the street from the Inn at Fishy, Fishy Cafe. This vibrant spot was alive with music and a cool, salty breeze. Jimmy and I ordered an appetizer of Cajun Mahi Bites, along with a plate to share of Steamed Shrimp, Scallops, French Fries, and Grilled Zucchini. The plate was just what we needed to pacify our desire for some coastal favorites.

Oak Island Half Marathon.

The course of the race started at the soccer park and made it’s way through some neighborhoods, marsh areas, and alongside the beach. The “hey you are halfway there point” was at the Oak Island Lighthouse. The weather was perfect with not a cloud in the sky so by mile four I was sweating bullets. The streets were crowded with motivating spectators and there were thankfully water stations every other mile.

This was my first race tackling a completely flat course. I initially thought it would be so much easier; however, I was wrong. A flat course has it’s obstacles and challenges just like courses with hills and terrains. Personally, running flat was a challenge, because it’s harder to perceive when you were coming up on the next mile, as well as keeping a steady pace.

Tip for those of you wanting to increase your pace: Start with the first wave of runners. I started the race with runners who average between 6 to 7 minutes per mile. My short, thunder thighs do not carry my body that fast; however, starting with a faster wave helped to boost and challenge my pace.

Island Jo’s.

Following the half marathon, we dropped in Island Jo’s for coffee and breakfast. This cafe is under new ownership by a couple originally from Fuquay-Varina, N.C. The menu carries a wide selection of breakfast/lunch sandwiches, but I decided to stick with a classic bagel and cream cheese.

Let me just start with the bagel…HOLY WOW. Their bagels are homemade, as well as the entire selection of cream cheese. I chose a Cinnamon Raisin Bagel, with Raisin Walnut Cream Cheese. It was heaven. I decided to splurge since we were technically on vacay by ordering a Coffee Frappuccino. It only got better when the owners asked if they could blend Oreo cookies into my Frappuccino.

Needless to say; if you are in the Oak Island area and looking for a breakfast/lunch spot, then you HAVE to try out Island Jo’s.

Provision Fish Co.

This is Jimmy’s absolute favorite restaurant and it’s pretty clear as to why. This is a restaurant where you put your name on the list, walk inside to grab a cold beverage, then sit back to relax and enjoy the marina’s scenic view.

The seafood is FRESH. Fresh as in local, recent, natural, and delectable.

I ordered half a pound of shrimp with french fries, while Jimmy got the daily special of half a pound of shrimp, crab cake, and corn. A multitude of words is required to describe the taste of how savoring our food turned out. We enjoyed our meal with a gorgeous view, fun music, and laughter all around. I was also impressed with the prices at Provision; everything on the menu seemed reasonable for the amount of food and quality.

It is a restaurant that will satisfy every seafood lover’s soul.
