Bringing Purpose Back To The Table.

Repurposing a Farmhouse Table.

Recently Jimmy and I found a post online advertising a solid wood table for sale. This table happened to catch our eye, because 1) our limited space requires a smaller table..this table seats four, but can adjust to six  2) solid Oak wood.

Originally Jimmy and I discussed building a farmhouse table, but this project only made it’s way to the long list of things that we still want to accomplish in our cabin.

We were excited to find this style of table, but there’s always a catch to a solid wood table listed for a cheap price. The table had been in the previous owner’s family for decades and was kept around merely because it was solid wood. The previous owners saw that the table be repurposed as a card table, craft table, and kids table.

With that being said, when we went to look at this table; we immediately noticed the paint stains, play-dough, smoke, smudges, and scratches. I was beginning to second guess everything; however, Jimmy reassured me that he could handle the challenge.

Jimmy began sanding our table the next day. I wanted to be of assistance, but I spent the rest of that weekend recovering from my sudden interaction with strand A of the flu. Jimmy informed me that he had to literally had to sand it by hand to get the polyurethane and tar build up out of it.

Jimmy averaged around 40 hours of labor into sanding and staining our table. It became his ‘after work project.’ It most certainly shows the persistence, energy, and drive that was put into bringing this table back to life. It sits beautifully in our cabin and now serves a new purpose.

A table has always been a significant and meaningful piece of furniture to me. It’s a place where growing up I spent time studying and completing projects, listening to family stories, enjoying sweet desserts with close friends, arguing with siblings,  laughing until I cried, appreciating meals, reading scripture, reflecting choices, along with crafting beside my mama and sister.

I am excited to share time, meals, laughs, and new memories alongside my husband, family, and friends at our new table.
